In writing this blog, I find more and more that I have a conflict which I need to deal with when deciding what topics to focus on. This conflict relates to the fact that my job at Telstra gives me many inspirations for great posts, either about the issues we face, or about the way the company is managed and run.
My conflict is that, even though this blog is my own personal blog, if I do post articles about these topics, I feel that many readers will associate my comments with Telstra, and interpret what I say as illustrating the internal workings of the company. I feel that in the majority cases this would not be acceptable as I would be revealing information that should be kept confidential, or providing a view of the internal machinations of the organisation which should not be revealed.
Is this view of mine that “what happens internally at work, stays internal” misguided, or am I right to feel that way that I do?

Hi Shane,
It is a tough one. I’m a fan of what happens at work, which may provide value to someone else, should be blogged about. I try to steer away from actual details about what we are doing, or what business decisions we are coming to terms with.
But, when it comes to the thoeries and thoughts that drive how we deal with those issues and situations, I’m all for sharing in the hope what I have found may prove useful to someone else. Mental Models are probably only truly valuable once built upon by others using them, so share them freely!
Cheers,
Steve

Shane,
Having struggled with that for many years my approach was to generally follow your approach and leave what goes on internally there. Even the theories & thoughts can get you into trouble! I knew many internal people read my blog and they would be able to join the dots and unless the corporation is truly open to this sort of communication you might find yourself with some issues.
I did occasionally blog about internal items, but always made sure I could reference public material and then add my own thoughts and theories.
